A previous secret Cold War bunker that has been transformed into a luxury home has gone on the market for £3 million.

In the leafy suburb of Chislehurst in Kent, it was designed and built for government officials to flee to in the event of a nuclear attack.

It fell into disrepair in the years following the end of the Cold War, but was converted into a up-to-date luxury home in 1998.

The property, now called The Glass House, is virtually unrecognisable – with a luxury swimming pool, a gorgeous atrium with windows cut into the five inch-thick walls and a glass staircase. The nuclear bunker was a Regional Control Centre and one of four in the London area, fully equipped with showers, food, water and fuel stores.

There was a map room, dormitory and diesel generators that powered the electrical, communication and air filtration systems.

Now the property has four generous bedrooms, two bathrooms and one L-shaped shower room thSteven May, branch manager of JDM estate agents, said: “This exceptional house is truly unique.
“It will appeal to those buyers looking for a modern luxury home with a fascinating history.”
At owes its unusual design to the fact it was the original blast-proof entrance to the bunker.
