What is the Immigration Bill – Right to Rent?

The Immigration Act 2014 introduced the Right to Rent Scheme; this is set out to prohibit illegal migrants from accessing private sector rented housing.

Under the scheme, private landlords, letting agents and home-owners that let rooms need to check the right of prospective tenants to be in the country by conducting document checks on their Passport, Driving License or ID Card.
Landlords who fail to make the required checks may be liable for a civil penalty of up to £3000 per adult resident illegal migrant tenant, up to five years imprisonment, both a fine and imprisonment and further sanctions under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

This is already in force in the West Midlands and was rolled-out nationally across England on 1st February 2016.

Implementation in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland are expected to be announced at a later date.

The cost of this service ranges from £5 to carry out the check yourself or £13 for a Serviced Document Verification Report.
